Cannon/Original: Original
Name: Vanya Calathiel
Name Meaning: Beautiful Light
Age: 50
Type: Edhel/Elf
Personality: Vanya has a very bright and cheery personality. She is almost always smiling, unless she's in trouble or someone is upset with her or holding her back. Being adventurous she tends to attract trouble from all directions left to her adventures by herself. Deep beneath the cheerful exterior however lies a strong line of stubborness that her family and friends see whenever she is held back. Lastly despite her disability and need for others she is very independent.
Likes: Anything to do with adventure, including climbing despite the fact that she falls... a lot. She loves horses and other friendly animals. Her favorite thing is the sight of moving water. For some reason she feels seeing moving water brings her the closest to hearing that she'll ever be.
Dislikes: She gets very frustrated when people forget to look directly at her when they're speaking as it's the only way for her to read their lips. She hates worrying others and feeling overly protected.
Skills: Her remaining senses are extremely keen even for an elf, she is also very good at healing and the art of self defense, taught to her by King Thranduil and Legolas throughout her very young life span.
Weaknesses: Vanya was born deaf, this causes a problem with her equilibrium/balance and also makes communication difficult with anyone but close family or friends.
General Appearance: Vanya has an awkward grace about the way she moves. When she keeps her balance she is as graceful as any other female elf. However due to the imbalance in equilibrium from being deaf she is veiwed as quite clumsy among the elves, usually not when walking normal but usually when she is climbing or dancing it is a problem for her.
.
Family: Vanya's mother died during childbirth and her father had passed on 6 months before her birth after he was attacked by a wild animal. Her adoptive father is King Thranduil, who took the child in feeling guilty because he had sent her father on the hunt for food which inevitably lead to his death.
History:After the death of her father King Thranduil did his best to ensure Vanya's mother was cared for during her pregnancy, even allowing the elf to stay in one of the many rooms located in Thranduil Hall. When her mother died the elven woman who delivered Vanya took the tiny infant to Thranduil to decide what to do with her. Hearing the child's cries King Thranduil felt his heart break and decided to raise her himself as if she were his own.
Knowing the delicate position he was in as King he gave Vanya a name not tied to his own, but made it clear that she was under his protection while he raised her. While he was pondering over a name she smiled up at him and so he called her by "Vanya Calathiel" which translates to "Beautiful Light", because her smile was so bright and cheerful. While by adoption she is a princess of Mirkwood, by birth she cannot claim the throne later in life. Leaving Legolas as sole heir.
Seeing her knack for getting into trouble at a very early age Legolas approached his father on this and the need to teach Vanya to defend herself early in life. At the age of 10 she began her training in swordsmanship and started training in the use of a bow and arrow at the age of 20. She is now an expert at both, though her clumsiness is a bit worrysome, at the very least she is able to protect herself from danger, if not herself.
Over the years her other senses have taken over in an attempt to make up for her lack of ability to hear. So much so that she can feel the vibrations of others footsteps no matter how soft. Given that is that, that is the only thing causing vibrations in the ground at that time. She can also tell who or what is approaching her within a radius of 50' as long as she is downwind of them or in a room that does not have a breeze in her. Her sense of sight and taste is also heightened, just not quite to the level of her other two senses.
Sample Post: Vanya laid in the green grass she had found in a small clearing amoung the woods. Her horse Mormir grazed nearby as she dreamed of the faraway places of Rohan, Rivendell an Gonder. The river running approximately 30 feet away rumbled the ground pleasantly and if she thought hard enough on it she would swear she could hear the sound of rushing water. That coupled with the strong sweet smell of grass filled her senses so that the Orc was nearly on top of her before she sensed him. His shadow luming over her small frame jerking her out of her dreams as she rolled out of the way of his club just in time...
